What is an FMLA psychological evaluation?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) entitles eligible employees to unpaid, job-protected leave for serious health conditions — including mental health conditions. When leave is related to a psychological diagnosis, employers may require documentation from a licensed mental health professional confirming the condition, its severity, and its impact on your ability to work.

What we assess

Our licensed psychologists conduct a thorough clinical interview and standardized assessment to evaluate your current psychological functioning, document your diagnosis, and describe how your condition affects your daily life and work capacity. The resulting report meets the documentation standards required by most employers and HR departments.

Confidentiality

Your evaluation is conducted privately and your records are protected by federal HIPAA law. We share only the information necessary to support your leave request — nothing more. Our goal is to advocate for you while maintaining the highest standards of clinical and ethical practice.

You may need an FMLA psychological evaluation if you are...

  • Experiencing a mental health condition — such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or OCD — that is interfering with your ability to perform your job

  • Seeking leave to care for a family member with a serious mental health condition

  • Required by your employer or HR to provide clinical documentation before leave is approved

  • Appealing a denied FMLA claim and need formal psychological documentation to support your case

  • Returning from leave and need documentation of your fitness to return to work

Not sure if you qualify?

FMLA covers a wide range of mental health conditions. If your condition significantly limits a major life activity, including working, you may be eligible. Contact us and we'll help you understand your options.

Frequently asked questions

Will my employer find out what I disclosed during my evaluation?

No. Your evaluation is protected by HIPAA. The report we provide confirms your diagnosis and its functional impact — it does not include the personal details of your clinical interview. Your privacy is protected throughout the process.

Do I need a referral or existing diagnosis?

No referral is needed. You do not need an existing diagnosis — our evaluation itself can establish one. If you have records from a current therapist or psychiatrist, bringing them can be helpful but is not required.

Does insurance cover the evaluation?

FMLA psychological evaluations are generally not covered by insurance, as they are considered evaluative rather than treatment services. We offer transparent self-pay pricing and can provide a superbill if you'd like to seek reimbursement from your plan.

How quickly can I get scheduled?

We typically have appointments available within a few business days. If you're facing a tight deadline, let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate you quickly.

Can the evaluation be done via telehealth?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth appointments for clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. In-person appointments are also available at our office.
